Many people dream of owning their own business and bringing in the profit that comes along with being a business owner. However, some people don’t want to take that leap of faith solo and begin to look for that business partner that will compliment them in this endeavor. When speaking with aspiring business owners who are looking at this option they believe that this will be much easier than owning a business solo.
But, I beg to differ. I believe anyone who works with someone on a business venture has to work that much harder to ensure their business runs smoothly and is a success. Because you have multiple people giving their input and emotions behind it as well. I have listed below a few qualities and tips you need to utilize on a consistent basis in order to be a successful partnership.

Compromise. (Open Mind) Recognize that all your ideas won’t be the one that is used for the company. Learn to bend some. Look objectively and pick which idea is best for the company. Let your EGO GO! You picked your business partner for a reason because you believed they had abilities that would ADD to the business. You should be knowledgeable about all aspects of the business. Even if you aren’t responsible for that specific area you should be able to run the business daily operations solo if needed. You don’t want to be caught out their not aware of how your business operates!
Effective Communication. Just like in any relationship it is a must that you overly communicate what is going on. No partner should be left out of the loop pertaining to what decisions are being made in reference to daily operations, money management, branding, hiring and the list goes on. You want to make sure that everyone is being heard and no one feels out of the loop. Make sure when you are communicating you are also listening to each other!
Utilize each other’s Strengths. In the business that I’m a co-owner of early on we realized I am great at marketing our business and networking with other persons. My partner doesn’t enjoy doing this and often dreads it. So instead of assigning her task that would involve marketing our business we have decided to delegate those duties to me. However, that doesn’t mean I just decided everything in regards to marketing and or networking. I still discuss all ideas with her and then we make a collective decision. Recognize your strengths this will be a great benefit to your company!
Discuss disagreements early. In business you aren’t always going to agree on everything and if you aren’t careful this can cause tension in your business. Instead of all emotions to take a toll plan a weekly or bi-weekly meeting were each partner is allowed to discuss disagreements, areas that needs improvements and how to resolve them.Be proactive instead of reactive.
If this sounds like too much for you to handle. I suggest you hold off on getting a business partner and look at starting a business on your own. Having a business partner is work but it can be great if you utilize the tips above!!
