When an employer tells you to forward a cover letter along with your résumé, do you squinch your face in a box and become frustrated before writing? Do you just forward your résumé without the cover letter?
If it is the latter, then, HOW’S IT GOING? Any responses yet? If not, it’s time to write a persuasive cover letter.
Here are a few tips to help you write a convincing cover letter:
- Sell Thyself! This is the time to preach positive things about yourself. The more specific you are about your best attributes, and accomplishments, the likelihood of getting a second read will be inevitable.
- Tell thy story with conviction! Tell a compelling story that anyone could be inspired. This is not the time to regurgitate your resume! This is the time to tell the story behind the resume.
- Thou shall not steal…or plagiarize. Tell your story, not what you see on the web. It’s okay to see samples, but not to copy verbatim.
- Thou shalt keep it short and simple. Three paragraphs with 3-5 clear, and concise sentences that engage the reader to want to read your resume. Cover letters can be a chore, or it can inspire. What contributions and solutions have you offered? That will compel any reader.
- Thou will not be ashamed of his or her own gospel. Most of the battle is making the attempt on paper. Since gospel means “good news,” then what solutions have you shared with an employer that is the good news of why you want to work for an employer.
