Whether a job seeker, or entrepreneur, people you meet should have
a positive, lasting impression. A job seeker wants to be memorable for all of
the right reasons:
- Eye contact. Learn to look engaged during the entire conversation. Have your eyes absorb most of what someone says, not just your mind.
- Shake hands firmly. No one likes a soft or wimpy hand shake.
- Get up out of your chair and greet everyone who arrives (10 or less people). You never know how much someone has if you are not proactive.
- When you arrive, go to each person and introduce yourself. That is what most people expect.
- Remember people by their name. If you didn’t understand the name, ask them to spell it for you. I like to spell the names out for them because it helps me to remember it.
- Respect personal space and hygienic consciousness. Not every person in the world will shake hands, eat foods prepare by strangers, etc.
- Hand out business cards upon request or agreement. People will probably go to Linked In to see your bio.
- Leave your desperation at home. People sense it and will run from you.
- Don’t break the ice with religion or politics. Sports, weather, or today’s faux pas is always safe and engaging.
